P0420 catalyst efficiency below threshold

Why P0420 is not automatic proof of a bad catalytic converter, and how oxygen-sensor behavior, exhaust leaks, and untreated misfires fit in.

P0420 reports that the catalytic converter on bank 1 is not cleaning the exhaust as efficiently as the ECU expects. It is one of the most misdiagnosed codes because the converter is often the victim of another fault, not the root cause.

P0420 is a converter-efficiency judgment, not a converter failure verdict.

The ECU compares upstream and downstream oxygen-sensor behavior.

Untreated misfires, oil burning, and rich running can kill a good converter.

Understand what the code measures

The ECU watches the upstream (pre-cat) and downstream (post-cat) oxygen or air-fuel sensors. A healthy converter stores and releases oxygen, so the downstream sensor should switch far more slowly than the upstream one. When the downstream signal starts to mirror the upstream signal, the ECU concludes the converter is no longer doing its job.

That conclusion is only as good as the sensors and the exhaust it is measuring. A lazy or contaminated downstream sensor, or an exhaust leak that lets outside air in, can produce a false P0420.

Rule out cheaper causes first

Check for exhaust leaks ahead of and around the downstream sensor. Confirm both sensors respond correctly in live data. Look for other stored codes; a converter rarely fails on its own without a reason.

Common converter-killers include long-term misfires dumping raw fuel, an engine burning oil or coolant, a rich fuel condition, or a failing sensor that the ECU trusts. Fixing those and clearing the code is cheaper than a converter you did not need.

Confirm before condemning the converter

If sensors, exhaust integrity, and fueling all check out and the downstream sensor still tracks the upstream signal, the converter itself is a strong suspect. Temperature comparison across the converter and backpressure checks can add evidence.

Emissions law matters here: the correct repair restores a compliant converter and healthy fueling. Straight-pipe deletes or defeat devices are unlawful in many places and create inspection and resale problems.

Know the driving impact

A steady P0420 with no drivability problem is usually not an emergency, but it will fail emissions testing and may hide a worsening upstream fault. If the code appears alongside misfires, rough running, or a rotten-egg smell, treat the root cause with more urgency.

Diagnostic checklist

  • Record P0420 and every companion code.
  • Inspect the exhaust for leaks near both oxygen sensors.
  • Compare upstream and downstream sensor switching in live data.
  • Check for misfires, oil burning, or rich-running history.
  • Verify fuel trims are within range.
  • Only test the converter directly after upstream causes are cleared.

Frequently asked questions

Does P0420 always mean I need a new catalytic converter?

No. Oxygen-sensor faults, exhaust leaks, and untreated engine problems can set P0420. Confirm sensor behavior and exhaust integrity before buying a converter.

Can I just clear P0420 and keep driving?

It usually returns, and the car will fail emissions testing. If a misfire or oil-burning issue caused it, ignoring the code can ruin a replacement converter too.
